My family just spent a week at the South Seas Island Resort on Captiva Island in Florida (next to Sanibel). We had never been and only knew a couple of people who had been. It was better than we'd expected, and I highly recommend it -- especially if you have children and definitely if you want to escape winter weather. Within a short walk or trolley ride (depending on where your room/house is on the resort) is just about anything you'd want -- beach (full services-bar, chair svcs, etc.), executive golf course (very nice), tennis club, large dual pool area (full service, outdoor restaurant, etc), ice cream parlor, sailing/boating/dolphin watching tours, active water activies (jet ski, fishing, kayaking, etc). There's also a quant little "town" (it's basically one dirt road) about 1/2 mile from resort entrance that has 3-4 old school local restaurants w/ outdoor seating next to beach and guys w guitars playing jimmy buffet tunes. It was a nice way to relax for a week.
