If you goto Rio for Carnival (or any of the other major Brazilian cities for that matter), make sure you book your hotel in advance... and expect to pay A LOT more than usual. Even beds in dorms that usually cost $10 suddenly cost $75 a night, and you have to book for at least 5 days. It is really quite insane.
