Ashdod is a city on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, halfway between Tel Aviv and Gaza. One of Israel's two industrial ports is located here.Busiest port of Israel with 60% of all imports and exports passing through it.

Ashdod famous by its diverse population,each wave of Jewish immigration represented. Jews from former Soviet Union makes up 1/3 of total 205 000 residents. City is also home to large numbers of Moroccan, Georgian, Ethiopian and recently, French and Argentinian Jews. Romanian and Indian communities also represented.

Large numbers of immigrants reflects a modest(by Israel's standards) housing prices in the city.

Southern beach area is home to Fatimid fortress from Crusades period located several meters/yards from coastline. The site is guarded by local policemen and entirely fenced.

Giv'at Yona (Jona's Hill) is highest point of the city (around 150 m above sea level).

Ashdod has a pretty long coast (8 km/6 miles) with several public beaches accessible for the public.

In downtown district (actually in upper part of the city) on Rogozin street large souvenir store is located. There you can buy local stamps and postcards; water from Jordan river, soil from Jerusalem and many more.

Near the northern beach area two hotels are located, prices around 250-300 new shekels (US$55-75) per day for one person, meals not included.
