[edit] History

Þingvellir was the original site of the Alþingi, arguably the world's oldest parliament, founded in the year 930.

[edit] Landscape

North American and Europe have been drifting apart – metaphorically – for many years. It's been happening here – literally – for ages. Iceland sits at the juncture of the North American and European continental plates, which are moving apart at a speed of a couple centimeters per year. Þingvellir straddles that fissure, and the landscape is cracked like the surface of a huge piece of brittle rubber that's being pulled in opposing directions.

The cafe/book-shop is located in the valley and offers hot dogs, soft drinks, various cookies, ice cream, bad coffee and the like. There are no other food establishments in the general area, so it is best to come prepared with a packed lunch. Note that the cafe/book-shop is located a few kilometers past the visitor information center (if coming from the direction of Reykjavik).
