Northern Europe > Iceland > Þingvellir National Park -->
Þingvellir National Park (commonly anglicised as Thingvellir) [1] is in Iceland.
[edit] Understand[edit] HistoryÞingvellir was the original site of the Alþingi, arguably the world's oldest parliament, founded in the year 930. [edit] LandscapeNorth American and Europe have been drifting apart – metaphorically – for many years. It's been happening here – literally – for ages. Iceland sits at the juncture of the North American and European continental plates, which are moving apart at a speed of a couple centimeters per year. Þingvellir straddles that fissure, and the landscape is cracked like the surface of a huge piece of brittle rubber that's being pulled in opposing directions. There are no other food establishments in the general area, so it is best to come prepared with a packed lunch. Note that the cafe/book-shop is located a few kilometers past the visitor information center (if coming from the direction of Reykjavik).
