My son is planning a service trip with Project Abroad for the summer of 2008. http://www.projects-abroad.org/ He will be working in either child care at an orphanage or teaching English and math. My daughter did a similar trip a few years ago to Nicaragua with Los Amigos de America. We have some guidance from the Projects Abroad organization, but they are not nearly as structured as Los Amigos. Having said that, does anyone have any travel tips or concerns regarding Senegal. All the info I have on the country is relatively positive, including the feedback from previous trip participants.
Are we there, yet?

I was in Dakar for just two days for work so only saw the inside of cars and offices. From what I saw, there isn't really much in Dakar that stands out as worth visiting. Having been to a lot of cities in Africa, I've found that they tend to be dirty and crowded. Many of the streets of Dakar are lined with trash and people standing around. Traffic can get very bad. All the people that I met are incredibly friendly. It helps if you speek French. I wish I could have seen more of the country side and eaten more of the food. I think that an organized tour would be a much better experience then traveling for work (clearly) so I would highly encourage sending your child there.
As a comparison, I love Africa as a continent and would visit there ahead of Central America. However, I enjoyed Nicaragua much more then my short time in Dakar.

Speaking of cities in Africa, a great one is Bulawayo in Zim. Now might not be the right time to go, but I have never felt more safe and welcomed than here. I met all sorts of artists in training doing sculpture painint and pottery, was invited to several homes for dinner, and have nothing but the fondest of feelings for the place.
(And if you are in Zim, you must go hike Chimanimani national park. Sweet lord that is highly recommneded)

I think we are putting our Vietnam plans on hold to go to Zim next year instead.
